If you put the iPhone 3G S alongside the iPhone 3G, you might think that there isn’t much of a difference between the two – that is, until you start using the iPhone 3G S. Apple decided to pack much more speed while retaining the formula that made the previous iterations of the iPhone winners.

Speed intensive applications and games now perform faster and smoother when compared to its predecessor. The 3G S comes with the ability to record videos using the upgraded 3-MP camera. Video quality is adequate, with colors a bit saturated and a bit of jerkiness. Nonetheless, it was good enough for sharing. When it comes to surfing the Web, the 3G S blew away its predecessors. When using 3G, the 3G S downloaded data twice the speed of its predecessor. Applications that pull data from the Web also launch faster. And just like its predecessor, the 3G S still supports Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync that gives users the power of push e-mail. As a media player, the 3G S delivers. You get 16 or 32GB of storage space for your movies, music and clips. Music won’t be interrupted in case you want to surf the Web while listening to your favorite song.

Typing has long been one of the problems with the previous iterations of the iPhone. This time around, Apple decided to fix it quite a bit by introducing the landscape keyboard. It reduces errors while typing at the cost of speed. As time goes on, more and more third party applications will be using the new landscape keyboard

While the 3G S is laden with improvements, its call quality is almost similar to iPhone 3G. Battery endurance is quite good, with its battery rated at 5 hours talk time, 9 hours surfing time and 30 hours of music playback.

The combination of beauty, speed and battery life makes the iPhone 3G S a truly compelling smart phone.
