The original iPhone was a technological breakthrough. It combined sleek aesthetics with cutting-edge technologies. However, it had a few flaws. This time around, Apple decides to correct some of them by releasing the new iPhone 3G.

The iPhone 3G design is similar to the original. You get the same minimalistic approach and unlabeled buttons around the phone. The 3G looks a bit thicker when compared with the original. On the other hand, the 3G is lighter at 4.7 ounces. In lieu of an aluminum back, Apple decided to go with smooth black plastic for better grip and lesser radio interference. It sports the same 3.5-inch display with 480 x 320-pixel resolution.

The interface of the iPhone 3G is still a winner. The multi-touch interface is very responsive. You can still swipe your fingers for scrolling. Moving icons around is still a cinch. Just press and hold and drag it wherever you want to go. It still retains the built-in accelerometer that automatically re-orients your screen between portrait and landscape mode. On the other hand, the onscreen keypad is still a bit tricky to use, but with the iPhone 3G’s excellent auto-correct system to help you out, the mistakes can be maintained to a minimum.

The iPhone 3G has several ways to connect to the Web: via HSDPA, EDGE and Wi-Fi. Data transfer in HSDPA was more than twice as fast compared to EDGE. As for Wi-Fi, the range of the iPhone 3G was better than the original iPhone. The iPhone 2.0 software included in the iPhone 3G puts the power of Microsoft Exchange in your fingertips. When connected to an Exchange Server, users get push e-mail, contact list and calendar as well.

As a multimedia player, the iPhone still gets top marks. The 3.5-inch display delivers crisper and brighter video when compared to its predecessor. Cover Flow is still available for those who loves the ease it provides in navigating music and video. The camera is still a 2-MP camera with no flash and no function to record video. Nonetheless, images captured with the 3G is good enough for sharing but not for printing.

One of the biggest improvements of the iPhone 3G over its predecessor is the quality of calls. The original iPhone’s call quality was mediocre at its best. It sounded to weak and scratchy. The iPhone 3G improves its speaker and microphone system, giving a whole lot louder and clearer call quality.

Faster data transfer and a greatly improved call quality are some of the features that make the iPhone 3G an excellent upgrade over its predecessor.
