Discount BlackBerry Bold: Raising the Bar on Smart Phones
with the BlackBerry Bold
Research In Motion’s BlackBerry Bold is indeed aptly named. There is no hint of
subtlety in this phone. Designed elegantly, the Bold is one smart phone that you won’t hesitate to take a second
look.
The BlackBerry Bold doesn’t just looks like a premium phone, it also feels like
one. It measures 4.5 x 2.6 x 0.6 inches and weighs in at 4.8 ounces. The heft and the size of the Bold will make
sure you won’t forget that it is in your pocket. It comes in a glossy black finish and silver borders. The cover at
the back is made from leatherette and is interchangeable. The Bold has an excellent 2.8-inch LCD that has a
resolution of 480 x 320. The display looks stunning: colors are vivid, sharp and clear. To navigate the Bold, a
white trackball can be used along with the several dedicated buttons located around the phone. It comes with a
miniUSB port, a menu button that you can customize, and for media lovers, a 3.5mm audio jack.
The Bold runs with RIM’s 4.6 operating system. The interface is clean and labels
are big and easy to read. It aids users visually by making the selected icon glow so that you are sure you are
clicking the right icon. Being a BlackBerry, you have access to excellent push e-mail services, such as the
BlackBerry Internet Service, BlackBerry Enterprise Server, IBM Lotus Domino, among others. The Bold also allows you
to open and edit Microsoft Office documents like Word, and Powerpoint files using its program Documents To
Go.
Web browsing is available via 3G and its 802.11a/b/g Wi-Fi with the Bold’s new
Opera Mobile browser. The Bold is made to be much more multimedia-centric unlike previous models. Audio sounded
crisp and clean with clear highs and mids. Album art is now displayed when playing music and it will continue to
play even if you decide that you want to check your e-mail.
The Bold comes with a 2-megapixel camera. Images captured looked quite vibrant,
colorful and sharp. On the other hand, while the Bold can capture video, the quality is mediocre. It was pixelated
and blurry even if the subject is not moving. Quality of voice call on the Bold is excellent. A lot of background
noises are eliminated and callers sounded crystal clear. Battery life is just average, with the battery being rated
at 4.5 hours of talk time and 13.5 days of standby.
